9ja Life is a free browser game about living in Nigeria. It is run by the operator of 9ja Life (“we”, “us”). We are the controller of the personal data described here. You can reach us through the Support link on the main menu of the game.
| When | What | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Playing on your device | Your characters, progress and settings, saved in your browser’s local storage. A backup file if you press Backup. | So your game is there next time. It stays on your device. |
| Creating an account | Username; password (stored as a hash); a recovery code (stored as a hash); date created and last sign-in. | To run your account, sign you in and let you recover access. |
| Cloud characters | The characters you save to your account: name, appearance, age, career, money, progress and similar game data. | To sync your characters between devices. |
| Friends, visits, blocks | Your friend list and requests, who you have blocked. | To run friends, home visits, and to keep blocked people away from you. |
| Playing online | Your character’s name, look, job title, city, position, emotes and chat messages while you are connected. Recent chat per city is held in memory for a short time and is not written to disk. | So other players can see and talk to you. |
| Safety and rules | Reports you send or that are made about you (reason, note, and the reported player’s last few chat messages), mutes, bans, an activity log of administrator actions. Your network address is kept only as a salted hash for network bans, and briefly in memory for rate limits. | To keep the game safe and stop abuse, spam and cheating. |
| Paying | Reference number, amount, item bought, your username (if you are signed in), and a masked version of your email (for example a***@example.com). Paystack receives your email and payment details directly. | To deliver what you bought, keep accounting records and handle disputes. |
| Visiting the site | Our web hosts (for example Cloudflare, and the company that hosts our game server) may log technical data such as IP address and browser type. | To deliver the site securely and prevent attacks. |
We do not ask for your real name, phone number, address, location or contact lists. Please do not put them in chat or character names.
Where data protection law applies (including the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023), we rely on: contract (to provide the game and your account), legitimate interests (security, preventing abuse, accounting), legal obligation (records we must keep), and consent where we ask for it, for example when you create an account.
We do not sell your data and we do not share it with advertisers.
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to know what we hold about you, correct it, delete it, receive a copy, object to or restrict some uses, and withdraw consent. Most of this you can do yourself in the game (change password, new recovery code, delete account). For anything else, contact us. If you are unhappy with our answer you can complain to the data protection authority, which in Nigeria is the Nigeria Data Protection Commission.
The characters in the game can be children, but that is fiction. Accounts, online play, chat and purchases are for people aged 18 or over, or younger people with a parent or guardian’s permission. If you are under 18, please ask a parent or guardian before you create an account, chat online or pay for anything. If you believe a child has given us personal data without permission, contact us and we will delete it.
Passwords and recovery codes are hashed, sign-in tokens are stored only as hashes, connections use HTTPS, and the admin tools are protected by a secret key. No online service is perfectly secure, so please use a strong, unique password, keep your recovery code private, and do not share personal details in chat.
Our hosting providers may store or process data outside Nigeria. Where we can, we use providers that protect data to a reasonable standard.
We do not set tracking cookies. The game uses your browser’s local storage for your saved characters, game settings, your chosen server address, your sign-in token (if you stay signed in) and your email for the payment form if you enter one. Clearing your browser data removes all of it, so use Backup first if you want to keep your characters. Paystack’s checkout page uses its own cookies.
If we change this policy in a way that matters, we will update the date at the top and, for big changes, tell players in the game.
Questions or requests about your data: the Support link on the main menu of the game.
